A handy new device we should consider adding into our tech toolkit is the Actiontec ScreenBeam Mini2 Wireless Display Receiver. In a business setting this is a great wireless tool to connect our laptop to the conference room TV or a monitor without having to drag a long HDMI cable across the room. Not all laptops or devices are compatible with the ScreenBeam unfortunately as they require Wi-Fi Certified or Wi-Fi Direct technology. There are a few ways to validate if your device is compatible. You can go to the following website and check the ‘Computers & Accessories’, ‘Wi-Fi Direct’, ‘Wi-Fi Certified’, and ‘Laptop computer’ options. We successfully tested the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro4, and the Surface Book with the ScreenBeam.http://www.wi-fi.org/product-finder-results?capabilities=3. You can also open a command prompt on your computer and type in the command “ipconfig /all” excluding the quotes. Scroll down and if you see the description on one of your Wireless LAN adapters that lists ‘Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter’ then your computer should be compatible with the ScreenBeam device.
The ScreenBeam device plugs into the HDMI port on the TV or monitor (Make sure to toggle the input to the correct HDMI port) and from a compatible computer you can connect to it by pressing and holding down the Windows key and then pressing the letter P on the keyboard. This will bring up a side bar. Click the ‘Connect to a wireless display’ option. You should see the ScreenBeam device listed as ‘SBWD 2E9823’ or something similar to this name. Click the option and your TV will tell you: ‘Magic is about to happen’ and suddenly your screen with be shared onto the TV or monitor.
If you would like to buy a ScreenBeam you can find them on Amazon’s web-site or other various outlets:
